UK Expands Toxic Alcohol Toxicity Alert Roster with 11 Nations

Toxic substance caution sign

British Foreign Office has added an additional eleven new countries to its official alert register concerning the dangers of toxic alcohol poisoning from tainted beverages.

This expanded advisory covers Bangladesh, India, Iran, Jordan, Libya, Malawi, Malaysia, Morocco, Nepal, Papua New Guinea, and Rwanda after evidence showing "a worldwide rise in the incidence of confirmed occurrences" of toxic alcohol contamination.

Only a few weeks ago, officials had earlier placed Ecuador, Japan, Kenya, Mexico, Nigeria, Peru, Russia, and Uganda to the current roster, in response to a number of high-profile events such as the deadly death of 6 tourists in Laos in 2024.

Travellers are being warned that as little as small amounts of methanol can result in vision loss or loss of life within 12–48 hrs.

Exactly what is Methanol and How is it Employed?

Toxic alcohol is a toxic substance commonly employed in antifreeze, windscreen washer fluid, and thinner. It is not intended for drinking.

Although it is generated during the creation of beverages, commercial firms reduce it to non-dangerous concentrations for ingestion through the purification method.

But in some countries, it is illegally mixed into beverages to reduce expenses, and since it is tasteless and smell-free, it is extremely challenging to notice.

Government Guidance for Tourists

Government minister the minister stated that all travellers should recognize the indicators of methanol poisoning.

"While consuming alcohol abroad, stick to trusted places and avoid unlicensed drinks or complimentary drinks," the minister advised.

"If something feels off, for example a hangover that's far more intense than usual or blurred eyesight – seek medical attention immediately."

The complete list of countries listed as posing a risk of toxic alcohol toxicity presently covers: Brazil, Bangladesh, Cambodia, Costa Rica, Ecuador, Fiji, India, Indonesia, Iran, Jordan, Kenya, Laos, Libya, Malawi, Malaysia, Mexico, Morocco, Nepal, Nigeria, Papua New Guinea, Peru, Russia, Rwanda, Thailand, Turkey, Uganda, and Vietnam.
